18:22 - and this week... i'm still a receptionist at the j.r. nash moving company here in cookeville. i really like it, generally... i'm well-trained enough now that i can handle a lot of the calls without running for help -- taking orders, setting up estimates, that kind of thing. it's nice to feel at least mildly competent. and i've more or less learned to use an old-fashioned electric typewriter (honing my white-out skills quite a bit in the process)... plus the place is run by a husband-wife team, and their 9-year-old daughter tends to hang out and show me pictures of cute dogs and cats. not too many work environments where you'll find that, eh?

17:27 - today, for the first time, i happened to think and check on the houseplant that i'd abandoned to the big, bad scary outdoors when i moved and didn't feel like fussing over finding it a pretty, sunny little niche -- the new place is considerably shadier than the old, and i hadn't been watering it on a very regular basis anyhow. cacti and i get along much better, but the last time i had any, a couple of them got too big and murdered each other before i could get around to relocating them.

anyway, my poor little orphan houseplant is fine. it looks far better than it ever did under my care. thriving, even.

i feel incredibly silly, but somehow this little discovery alleviates an enormous amount of guilt...

18:44 - those of you who know me well and know my tendency to ignore the phone will get a laugh out of this: this week, i'm a receptionist!

and, er, i'm being thrown out of the honors lounge because it's late. so i'll tell you more about it later.

and, um, hurrah! mono makes antibodies!

19:13 - live, back in cookevegas, where i'm supposed to be helping pre-frosh who thus far seem perfectly capable of helping themselves.

bonnaroo update: while i never saw any of the mud-wallowing revelers described in the news stories, a visit to wal-mart this morning with les parents uncovered many atypically-garbed individuals sporting glittery paper bracelets... most of them attempting to buy beer before the day's acts started. at least they got to experience a little of the local culture -- beer-buying before noon on sunday in most of small-town tennessee simply can't be done.

ok, i've been caught, i should go be helpful...

17:10 - i'm in manchester.

and it doesn't smell like dirty hippies. or even patchouli.

i'm a little disappointed.

see, this weekend's bonnaroo, the big music festival that is prob'ly the only reason anyone from anywhere else has ever heard of manchester. i mean, we used to be the pajama capital of the world, but then all the pajama factories closed... so these days, this is it. and while i'm mainly in town to see les parents and go watch the music man up at tpac despite the stench the tennesssean raised about its being a non-union production, i was hoping at least a little excitement would've rubbed off on the town... i sorta came to appreciate the sport of people-watching last year while putting in all that time in the cafes of bzak.

alas, though, no traffic gluts here, no crazies running around the streets, not even any destitute beer vendors whose supplies were raided by crazed deadheads. oh well, guess you have to buy a ticket to see stuff like that...

15:39 - this morning, i sent my mom an article about the phenomenon known as the quarter-life crisis, just to show that i'm not the only directionless, recently-graduated dork out there.

and i really like the quote with which she replied.
"Adults are always asking kids what they want to be when they grow up because they are looking for ideas." --Paula Poundstone

methinks i'll go find a five-year-old to interrogate...

19:00 - if you ask me, this whole graduating thing's a bit overrated.

upon attempting to check out books from the university library, i find that i have to fill out a form, downgrade myself to a "community member" -- cuts the checkout time in half, and now i can only have ten books at a time.

not that i have to write a research paper at the moment or anything...

and let's not even mention the fitness center...

16:42 - ugh, as seen in this lovely sample, my graduation photos seem to have been improperly scanned. i'd live with it and cut off the black borders, but it also screwed up the color balances... and that's just too much work, so i'm going to try to make wal-mart redo it. patience, friends.

and we now interrupt this transmission to go play croquet on the quad. "off with his head!"

15:54 - oh, and for the record.

i really really like temp work. my current assignment is working with the materials manager at nielsen and bainbridge in gainesboro. i get to do stuff like inventing a system to sort out all the crazy amounts of paperwork from different international accounts that were overflowing her desk. (thus the need for a temp). it's really cool getting to hang out in a company, see what kinds of functions go with which jobs; very helpful for figuring out where to apply for what.

alas, i really do not like the temp situation. being on-call "as needed" means no guarantee for a pay-check. since donna doesn't have time this week to explain what else she wants me to do, i'm not only temporarily employed, i'm temporarily laid off.

time to find a real job.

15:34 - the internet's being horribly slow right now. otherwise i'd have my pictures from the graduation ceremony up. as is, i might have them in the next hour or so. or i might get frustrated, give up, and go read a book... or if i'm really being productive, i'll work on spiffifying my resume. but despite my doubts in my card table's ability to support weight, i just put my computer monitor back on top of the table and moved the table near enough to the futon to make tinkering around with my computer in an upright, seated position practical again. (it's been on the floor under the table all year. i decided that i don't like computing while lying down as much as i thought i might... i tend to fall asleep.) so, the point of the tangent -- drumroll please -- is that i can more efficiently use my resources by working on my resume from the house. where there's no internet and thus not much else to do with the computer.

but anyway. i wonder if those pictures have downloaded yet.

15:23 - the little right-brain/left-brain quiz that starts from this page was kinda neat... my results:
Your Brain Usage Profile
Auditory : 29%
Visual : 70%
Left : 50%
Right : 50%

kait, you exhibit an even balance between left- and right- hemisphere dominance and a slight preference for visual over auditory processing. With a score this balanced, it is likely that you would have slightly different results each time you complete this self-assessment quiz.

You are a well-rounded person, distinctly individualistic and artistic, an active and multidimensional learner. At the same time, you are logical and disciplined, can operate well within an organization, and are sensitive towards others without losing objectivity. You are organized and goal-directed. Although a "thinking" individual, you "take in" entire situations readily and can act on intuition.

You sometimes tend to vacillate in your learning styles. Learning might take you longer than someone of equal intellect, but you will tend to be more thorough and retain the material longer than those other individuals. You will alternate between logic and impulse. This vacillation will not normally be intentional or deliberate, so you may experience anxiety in situations where you are not certain which aspect of yourself will be called on.

With a slight preference for visual processing, you tend to be encompassing in your perceptions, process along multidimensional paths and be active in your attacking of situations or learning.

Overall, you should feel content with your life and yourself. You are, perhaps, a little too critical of yourself -- and of others -- while maintaining an "openness" which tempers that tendency. Indecisiveness is a problem and your creativity may not be in keeping with your potential. Being a pragmatist, you downplay this aspect of yourself and focus on the more immediate, obvious and the more functional

if nothing else, they got the indecisive bit right...
